Fizzy drinks are the largest single source of sugar for children aged 11-18, and they provide an average of 29% of daily sugar intake. Cutting out fizzy drinks is an easy way to reduce your sugar intake. By committing to going fizz free for the entire month of February, you can develop new habits to make it easier to cut down on fizzy drinks for the rest of the year.
Furthermore, SUGAR SMART are joining forces with Southwark Council this year to help take Fizz Free February national, across the SUGAR SMART network. There are a wide range of free resources that can be used across a variety of settings to help facilitate the campaign, including FAQ’s, diaries, certificates, posters and communications toolkit.
We are pleased to see the issue of sugary drinks, obesity and oral health being raised on a national scale – something we have long campaigned on through our Give Up Loving Pop campaign which we launched in February 2015. Alongside the free range of resources available on the GULP website, we also offer a range of evaluated PSHE toolkits for KS2 and KS3 schools and promotional materials. GULP has now been delivered in nine local authorities across the North of England, with many more planned for 2019.
